Carlos Mencia

A Man On The Move

Mencia

Get ready to roll with laughter as Carlos Mencia arrives for yet another brilliant stand-up comedy performance this October at The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center! Mencia is heading out this fall on his “At Close Range Tour." Visiting more than 60 cities across the country, this tour is by far larger than all of his previous tours. Mencia was born with the talent to make people laugh and deliver a knockout comedy performance, which he capitalizes on through stand-up, television and movies. His comedic style exudes a blunt honesty, covering hot topics like race, sex, gender, politics and religion. He has the rare gift of insightful perception and precise delivery and represents the internal voice inside us and demands we admit to thinking what he says out loud.

After a successful performance at an open mic night at The Laugh Factory, Mencia left California State University where he was pursuing a degree in electrical engineering. He was quite successful doing small stand-up comedy shows at local venues for a few years, receiving his big break when he performed on “Comedy Central Presents” in 2002. With his success and popularity, Comedy Central gave Mencia his own show, “Mind of Mencia,” in 2005. The second season of “Mind of Mencia” became Comedy Central’s second highest rated program. Television viewers ranked Mencia second on Comedy Central’s list of best stand-up comics.

Carlos Mencia is a man on the comedian career path. He’s shifted from stand-up to sketch comedy on “Mind of Mencia,” and has recently made the move to the big screen! With guest appearances on the television shows “Moesha” and “The Shield,” and starring in the film Outta Time, it has become glaringly obvious that Mencia possesses a very versatile style of comedy. Mencia played alongside acting stars Ben Stiller and Michelle Monaghan in The Heartbreak Kid. In an interview about his transition into movies, Mencia talked about how he has to tone down things like expressions to not appear like he is overacting. He says, “It was really, really fun for me to be saddle, because I rarely, in my comedy, get the chance to be saddle.” He also talks about how acting for the big screen is different than performing live because he does not get to see the audience’s immediate reaction to his jokes. The suspense killed him for over a year waiting for the release of The Heartbreak Kid. Relief came at the first screening when he watched people laugh at his jokes, confirming that he was indeed funny!

Whether in the comedy club, on television, or on the big screen, Carlos Mencia is without a doubt one of the most popular comedians in the country. Be at The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center on October 3 to experience Mencia’s comedic commentary first-hand. After all, everyone can do with a little laughter in their life!
