King of Latin Pop Heats up the Erwin Center


Known for his electrifying guitar skills and his charitable endeavors, Juanes has quickly become the leading artist in the Latin music industry, achieving tremendous commercial success and critical acclaim. He has sold over 11 million albums and has won a trophy case of awards, from numerous Grammys to France’s highest cultural honor, L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and he has topped charts in a wide range of countries, including not only the entire Spanish-speaking world, but also such unlikely markets as Germany, where his 2005 single “La Camisa Negra” was a number one hit. The international star is from Medellin, Colombia and released his first album Fijate Bien in 2000. He released his second album in 2002, Un Día Normal, and it became the No. 1 Spanish-language album for all 2003 in both sales and airplay. He then released Mi Sangre (2004) and La Vida…Es Un Ratico (2007).
Not only is Juanes a musical superstar, but he has been named by TIME magazine as “One of the 100 Most Influential People in the World” for his humanitarian work and desire to influence social change through music. “With his socially conscious lyrics, [Juanes] is Latin America’s answer to Springsteen and Bono…combine[s] charisma with stirring messages of global social awareness…exhibits a sheer musicality that translates across cultures,” says People magazine. He is a global activist, and dedicates his time and energy to philanthropic organizations such as UNHCR (The UN High Commissioner on Refugees), YouthAIDS, Red Cross and United for Columbia. He is very passionate about sending the message of peace and confronting the violence in his native country of Colombia. Juanes personally established the Mi Sangre Foundation to help victims of anti-personnel mines.
Over the past few years, Juanes has had an intensive touring schedule and has brought his music to millions of fans across the world. His most recent “Mi Sangre Tour,” played 170 concerts over 19 months in 31 countries.
