We had so much fun putting together the Texas Title Fight in June, we thought we’d give it another go and this card is shaping up to be a beauty with the co-headliner, and champion, from our event in June, Texas super lightweight champion Gilbert “Boogie” Vera relinquishing his current title to take on the reigning Texas welterweight champion, Ray Lino “Randy” Gatica, also crowned that evening.
In the Texas Title Fight, Vera needed only two rounds to knockout Gilbert “Ivy” Guevara to claim the Texas super lightweight crown, his first. In an interview with the Austin American-Statesman following the bout Vera stated, “I was a bit surprised (about the quick knockout), but I knew it wascoming. I knew I had hurt him with some of my punches. I knew he was fatigued.” Vera comes from a long line of fighters following in the footsteps of his Texas Golden Gloves heavyweight champion father, Gilbert Sr., and his brother, Brian, the IBA continental super middleweight champion. For Downtown Fight Night on November 3, Vera will relinquish his current title to move into the welterweight division and challenge Gatica.
In the co-main event on the same evening in June, Gatica needed only 2 minutes 44 seconds in the first round to knockout his opponent and improve to 7-0 as a pro to claim the Texas welterweight belt. The Austin American-Statesman quoted Gatica as saying, “You always go in there hoping the fight will be short and tonight it was.” Similar to Vera, Gatica comes from a family of boxers as his father, Freddie, competed in the 1981 Golden Gloves nationals in Lake Placid.
The undercard at this time includes former Golden Gloves heavyweight champion Todd “Pop Pop” Subocz and some of Austin’s rising stars such as, Casey “The Wizard” Ramos, Curtis Meeks, Ryan Lawson, Thomas Bloodworth and Adauto Gonzalez plus, Bonnie Joe McGee, Josue Moreno and more.
