Carlos Mencia

How Carlos Mencia Found His Comedic Calling

Carlos Mencia

Don’t miss out on the hilarity of the human experience when Carlos Mencia visits The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center during his Punisher Tour on Friday, October 20. His notoriously blunt and comic truthfulness has been with Mencia since before he ever considered doing stand-up comedy. It wasn’t until he was perpetually encouraged to do stand-up by his co-workers that he even considered the possibility. According to an interview with North County Times, he says “I had no idea whatsoever that I could do stand-up (comedy). I’d just vent my frustrations to guys at work and they would laugh their (butts) off, but I was serious.”

Honduran-born Mencia was the 17th child of 18 and was sent to live with his aunt and uncle in East L.A. at an early age. It was in that setting that Mencia relied on the support of his large family to stay out of trouble and avoid the popular gangs of Los Angeles. He went on to major in electrical engineering at Cal State L.A., where he landed a job in the insurance industry. After that first open-mic night at The Laugh Factory, Mencia knew that he had found his calling – comedy.

After proving his talent through stand-up comedy, Mencia later got his own show, “Mind of Mencia,” on Comedy Central. “Traditional networks would cast me as the head of a household with 16 children,” says Mencia, “which I find extremely offensive because there are 18 kids in my family.”

Enjoy Mencia’s comedic commentary first-hand at The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center Friday, October 20.
