Luis
Miguel

A
Concert for Lovers of Latin Music
“It’s
a very special tour, a very ambitious tour, and it could be
the most important in [Luis Miguel’s] career,” says
Luis Miguel’s manager, Alejandro Asensi. Though Asensi
may have a biased view, ecstatic reviews of the Mexico
en la Piel (Mexico Under My Skin) tour have been rampant since it
started September 13 in California. Miguel, known for his strong
live performances, is planning approximately 70 performances
on this tour. He will go through the United States (with a
stop off in Austin!), Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and hold his
last show in Mexico.
The Puerto Rican singer has been performing since he was 12
when he won his first Grammy Award for his duet with Sheena
Easton “Me Gustas Tal Como Eres” (I Like You Just
as You Are). Since then he has toured consistently through
the United States and Mexico, becoming the first Latin artist
to receive gold records in the U.S. for a Spanish-speaking
record. In between tours he has also managed to work with some
of the biggest names in music history, including: Frank Sinatra,
Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan.
When he released Amarte
es un Placer (Loving You is a Pleasure)
in 1999 he reflected on what he wanted his future albums to
sound like, and what he wanted them to say. “I can’t
go on changing my style from one record to the other according
to the latest fad. I don’t go by what is in fashion,
nor by what sells or is considered marketable. I go by what’s
in my heart, what goes with my style and how I sing. That’s
how I am. I can’t say that it’s my secret, because
it’s not a secret. It’s just the way I choose my
music.”
He has certainly accomplished his goals on Mexico
en la Piel.
This album has been promoted as a pop album and a tribute to
the rich tradition of mariachi and ranchera heritage in Mexico.
Though he has long included mariachis in his performances,
Asensi says that Mexico is Miguel’s first mariachi-only
record. The tour includes a full introduction to Mexico as
well as a much anticipated recap of Miguel’s hits.
