Sisters In the Spirit
Sunday, March 6

Sisters in the Spirit Unite The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center
Under One Voice
On March 6, the women of “Sisters in the Spirit” will take the stage at The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center and present a showcase that exemplifies the unifying power gospel music has on all faiths. Featuring several extremely talented musicians including Yolanda Adams, and led by musical director, Sheila E., “Sisters in the Spirit” is dedicated to presenting women with an opportunity to celebrate their own accomplishments in leadership positions, the business world and within their own families.
For centuries, music has been the primary tool for crossing boundaries and uniting people despite their differences, whether they are culturally,
gender-based, or spiritually rooted. Because it has the power to overcome obstacles created by language, music has been a tried and true method of
building relationships.
The same holds true for gospel and faith-based music. No longer confined to churches and religious environments, gospel music receives regular radio airplay and draws thousands of people to arenas for concerts. The purpose of the music is not to convert people to one particular denomination or belief system, but rather to create an experience that people from all walks of life can enjoy and use for their own personal growth.
The women of “Sisters in the Spirit” hope to build upon the widespread appeal of gospel music by featuring several different artists, including
13-time Stellar Music Award winner, two-time Grammy winner and Houston native Yolanda Adams. Dubbed “The Barbara Streisand of gospel music,” Adams is combining her vocal talent with that of Martha Munizzi, who has recorded three best-selling albums and serves as music pastor at Faithwood Church in Orlando, Florida. They will be joined by Michigan-based group RiZen, comprised of Adriann and Aundrea Lewis, Knika Trigg and Ashley Jones. The group's self-titled debut album has caused quite a stir in the gospel industry and garnered numerous Dove and Stellar gospel music award nominations.
Rounding out the musical ensemble is Kelly Price, whose collaborations with Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Faith Evans and Brian McKnight have established her reputation as an R&B/pop icon. She recently performed in Tyler Perry's extremely popular play “Why Did I Get Married?”
Self-improvement and faith author Juanita Bynum will also take part in the performance, offering her insights on the inner workings of worship and its benefits. According to Bynum “The purpose of the 'Sisters in the Spirit' tour is to give back a little bit, to think about YOU just for a day.” Also included in the program is health and fitness expert Donna Richardson Joyner, who will offer advice for all who attend.
Finally, Sheila E. will serve as music director for the show. A highly respected percussionist who played with Diana Ross, Ringo Starr, Marvin Gaye and Prince, Sheila E. is also an advocate for breast cancer awareness and youth education.
There is no particular headliner for the tour, as each artist will sing both solo and duets backed by Sheila E's percussion direction. This particular choice was a simple one since it most accurately reflects the sense of community upon which the tour is based.
The third annual “Sisters in the Spirit” tour makes its way through 21 cities, stopping by The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center on March 6. This celebration of unity and sisterhood is a unique experience meant to be shared with others.
