Luis Miguel

November 4

Miguel Brings Latin Music North of the Border

Luis Miguel is a singer and performer of super-star status. Miguel has been putting out albums since he was twelve years old, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to stop any time soon. He will be touring on his 2004 album Mexico en la Piel (Mexico Under my Skin) starting in September, and he’ll be making a stop to perform at The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center Friday, November 4. This show will mark the first time the Performing Arts Center and The Theatre at the Frank Erwin Center present an event together.

Miguel won his first Grammy Award when he was just 12 years old, for his duet with Sheena Easton, “Me Gustas Tal Como Eres” (I Like You Just as You Are). By the time he was 15, he released his fifth album, Soy Como Quiero Ser (I Am as I Want to Be), collaborating with producer and composer Juan Carlos Calderon. The album earned 5 platinum and 8 gold records.

His fifth album’s success was a tough act to follow, but the first single on his sixth album broke records by staying at the top of Latin radio charts for more than seven months. The other singles culled from the album kept Miguel at the #1 position on Billboard’s ‘Hot Latin Tracks’ for over a year.

Miguel toured Latin America and the United States with unprecedented success when he was only 20 years old. Miguel has been a lot of firsts – including the first Latin artist to receive gold records in the US for a Spanish-language record, and the first Latin singer to completely sell-out New York’s Madison Square Garden.

Miguel has worked with some of the top names in music history. He recorded the well-known classic “Come Fly With Me” with Frank Sinatra as a duet for the album Sinatra Duets II. He also performed at the televised celebration of Frank Sinatra’s 80th birthday alongside the likes of Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Natalie Cole and Bob Dylan.

Miguel has also recorded his music for movies. Disney Studios asked Miguel to record the song “Sueña” for the Hunchback of Notre Dame soundtrack, which was then included on his new album Nada es Igual. Miguel’s relationship with Hollywood didn’t end there. If you stroll down the Hollywood Walk of Fame, there’s a star for Miguel that was placed on the famous Hollywood Boulevard in 1996.

In September of 2001, Miguel was to perform at the Latin Grammy Awards scheduled for the 11th, but due to the tragic events of that day, the event was cancelled. To support and help the victims of this tragedy, Miguel accepted Michael Jackson’s invitation to participate in a fundraising project, working alongside other artists such as Celine Dion, Jennifer Lopez and Gloria Estefan. Miguel has sold more than 50 million albums worldwide
