Folk-Pop
Trio Brings Us Back To A Simpler Time
In 1961 fate brought a folk singer, a comedian, and a Broadway
actress together known as Peter, Paul and Mary.
It was in 1961 that Peter Yarrow, Noel (a.k.a. Paul) Stookey
and Mary Travers came together as they stood on stage in front
of the infamous brick wall at The Bitter End coffee house on
Bleeker Street in Greenwich Village. This success marked the
beginning of an incredibly influential time for Peter, Paul
and Mary, and for the contemporary urban folk tradition which
they personified.
The Bitter End is still there today and Peter Paul and Mary
are still performing 40 concerts a year. What began as individual
solo careers in the Village became a “family” through
the insight, creativity and foresight of Albert Grossman, their
mentor and manager. No American folk group has lasted longer
or amassed a more loyal following than Peter, Paul and Mary.
During their now legendary career, the trio won five Grammys,
produced thirteen Top 40 hits, of which six ascended into the
Top 10 as well as six gold and three platinum albums.
The three performers have achieved their remarkable status
by never wavering from their earliest commitment to the spirit
of the folk music tradition they inherited. Peter, Paul and
Mary’s 25-song anthology celebrates the community-in-song
that can come only from sitting around a campfire. Bringing
together some of their best-known songs from their career, “Around
The Campfire” is the perfect soundtrack for a hearthside
sing-along. Included are such fireside folk-song favorites as “This
Land Is Your Land” and “If I Had A Hammer,” as
well as Peter, Paul and Mary standards like “Leaving On
A Jet Plane” and “Puff, The Magic Dragon”.
February, 2004 saw the release of the trio’s long-anticipated
career retrospective, a boxed set called “Peter, Paul
and Mary: Carry It On”, as well as their first new studio
album in over a decade, “In These Times”.
