Best
Of NCAA Track Coming To Austin In June
This June, fans have a chance to be a part of one of the most
spectacular track and field events ever held in the state of Texas.
The University of Texas will serve as host for the 2004 NCAA Outdoor
Track and Field Championships from Wednesday, June 9 - Sunday,
June 12 at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
More than 65 of the top men and women’s Division I track
and field programs will be vying for national supremacy. This
year marks the return of the Olympic Games, and the NCAA Outdoor
Championships will feature Olympic hopefuls, past NCAA champions
and some of the best up-and-coming amateur athletes in the world.
Last June, the Texas women were NCAA finalists, marking the highest
finish since head coach Bev Kearney’s Longhorns won back-to-back
titles in 1998 and 1999. It was also the UT women’s 10th
consecutive top 10 finish. Meanwhile, Bubba Thornton’s Longhorn
men finished 21st.
Building on their strong finishes, both squads placed at this
year’s NCAA indoor championships. The men’s squad
placed fourth - its best-ever NCAA indoor finish - and the women
tied for seventh.
All-American and sophomore sensation Sanya Richards is the defending
NCAA 400 meter champion; in addition Richards will lead the 4x400M
relay, along with senior Raasin McIntosh, as the Longhorns relay
quartet is the defending
NCAA titlist in that event. Leading the
way for the men will be sophomore Brendan Christian, who earned
All-America honors as a freshman in the 200 meters and 4x400M
relay, while senior Jermaine Cooper claimed All-America certificates
in the 110-meter hurdles in 2001 and 2002.
