George Strait

Friday, January 28

He'll Leave You With A Smile

Country superstar George Strait revisits the stage at the Frank Erwin Center this January. Promoting his latest album, 50 Number Ones, Strait and his band, Ace in the Hole, will perform beloved singles such as “You Look So Good in Love” as well as his most recent number one, “I Hate Everything.” 50 Number Ones debuted at number one on the Billboard's Top 200 charts, narrowly beating out Usher in its first week.

George Strait is one of the most recognized faces in music. Females of all ages squeal with delight in his presence and flocked to see his theatrical releases “The Soldier” and “Pure Country.” Men, more subtlety, show their affection for Strait by emulating his nonchalant demeanor and appearance. Strait's characteristic grin and hat tip sell merchandise from western wear to Chevy trucks.

Strait is an icon. The sum of the man includes more than just his music and it's hard to top 25 platinum albums. Yet, Strait is a remnant of a different time. A member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and recent inductee into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, George Strait lives the lifestyle he balladeers. The Texas native ropes steers, wears Wrangler jeans, and even married his high school sweetheart, Norma Voss.

Strait's musical stylings draw from traditional honky-tonk and Western swing. Through 26 years of making country music, Strait has stayed true to his sound and to the integrity of the genre perfected by Hank Williams, George Jones, and Merle Haggard. If you've missed the country locomotive known affectionately to fans as George, you don't have to look too far. His songs are waiting to be played on a jukebox near you.
Opening for Strait are newcomers, Dierks Bentley and Amber Dotson. Bentley‚s self-titled debut has skyrocketed up the country charts and his single, “What Was I Thinking,” is the first debut song to reach number one in two years. The Academy of Country Music named Bentley the Best New Artist of 2004.

Up-and-comer, Amber Dotson began her career singing in local competitions in Garland, Texas. She has since wowed Nashville and the country music scene with songs that are strong, soulful, and clearly country. Dotson describes her songwriting technique on the Capitol Records web site: “Try to come up with something cool, make something rhyme with it, and hopefully touch someone else’s life.”
