Gibson-Baldwin Grand Slam Jam
Friday, April 30

Press Luncheon Kicks Off Grand Slam Jam

The festivities were officially underway after Mayor Will Wynn declared April 30 the “Gibson-Baldwin Grand Slam Jam Day.” In attendance at the kick-off luncheon were event founder and tennis legend Jim Courier, city councilman Brewster McCracken and local Austin media.

Although the Grand Slam Jam is a two-day tennis and music extravaganza, the forefront of the event benefits the Hope Foundation, a cancer research center. In fact, Corina Morariu, one of this year’s competitors and women’s doubles contender, is a cancer survivor.

“When you meet someone like Corina who has overcome such a challenging disease, it puts things into perspective,” said Courier. “Here is someone who was on her deathbed, and now she’s healthy and a champion on the tennis court.”

In addition to Courier and Morariu, John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova will be competing in this year’s jam. Also scheduled to appear is comedian Jon Lovitz.
